4-Year MD Program

This consists of two years of Basic Medical Sciences and two years of Clinical Sciences.

First Year - This Comprises of three semesters conducted in the Luton, UK or Dakar, Senegal (optional). Each semester is of 15 weeks duration.

Second Year - This comprises of fourth and fifth semesters, each of fifteen weeks duration which are conducted in the Luton, UK or Dakar, Senegal (optional)

Third Year - This comprises of Clinical Science rotations, which includes six (6) core rotations conducted in affiliated hospitals in USA, UK or Senegal.

Fourth Year - This is the final year of the 4-year MD program, which includes 24 weeks of Electives in the affiliated hospitals.

The students will have the choice of attending clinicals in USA, UK or Senegal. The clinical programs offered by the affiliated hospitals in the USA are all ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) accredited.

BASIC SCIENCE DIVISION OF THE M.D. PROGRAM 

In the first two years of medical school, students focus on basic knowledge of health and disease and are introduced to the care of individuals and populations.

BASIC SCIENCE CURRICULUM

The basic science curriculum has been designed to prepare students for Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). The basic science curriculum is comparable both in breadth and depth to those of most medical schools in the United States and the United Kingdom. The basic science program consists of five semesters of coursework, each semester of fifteen weeks duration, over a period of twenty months.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Gross Human Anatomy and Medical Imaging Top  
 
10 Semester Hours  

This course provides students with a basic knowledge of the normal gross structure of organs and systems of the human body. At King's College London, dissection of cadavers is looked upon as an integral part of this course. An emphasis will be placed on the imaging techniques of conventional X-rays, ultrasound, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The course looks first at the normal and investigates the signs and differential diagnoses of disease, then studies the findings in specific disorders.

Histology and Cell Biology Top

Through lecture and laboratory courses, the microanatomy of cells, tissues, and organs is studied. The microstructure of tissues and organs are examined in relation to their function.

 
Medical Embryology  Top

In this course, the principles of human embryological development from gametogenesis to birth are studied. Common congenital malformations illustrate mechanisms of teratogenesis.
Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine Top

This course investigates the principles of the causes and distribution of diseases in human populations. The fundamentals of this course provide the tools for the collection, analysis, and interpretation of information from groups of patients, which give a basis to the clinical application of epidemiology.

Problem Based Learning Top 
 
4 Semester hours
  
This includes problem based learning in different medical subjects, where the main aim is to connect basic information to clinical scenarios. It includes important cases which require knowledge of important medical subjects in order to correlate the clinical information. PBL offers a unique opportunity to summarize most of the subjects of basic sciences together. It also includes verbal and poster presentations by the students and group discussions.

Biochemistry Top

This course maps the key biochemical reactions in the body. Included is a study of the body’s chemistry, which includes reactions of constituents of living matter, including such metabolic fuels such as carbohydrates, coenzymes, lipids, minerals, nitrogen, nucleic acids, proteins, and vitamins. Students will also focus on specific clinical scenarios and discuss how defects in these biochemical pathways lead to disease.

Medical Physiology Top

This course aims to explain the physical and chemical factors that are responsible for the origin, development and progression of life. Physiology integrates into a functional whole, the individual functions of all the different cells and organs of the human or animal body. The successful interaction involves, among other things, cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, muscular, neural and respiratory processes.

Neurosciences Top

This course investigates the physiology as well as the gross and microscopic structure of the brain, spinal cord and nervous systems of the human body. Brain energy metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis and degradations as well as psychopharmacology are investigated. At King's College London, the use of slides alongside laboratory dissection of the brain, spinal cord and allied structures aids the student to integrate each aspect of the study.


Pathology I  Top

This course provides an introduction to the reactions, at all stages of human life, of cells, tissues, and organs to disease processes. The emphasis is upon basic concepts and principles of disease processes. Our aim is the integration of recent discoveries relating to the molecular basis of common diseases such as arteriosclerosis, cancer, diabetes, and obesity. Once again, the importance of laboratory medicine in the practice of medicine is studied. Discussion of laboratory diagnosis helps students achieve better integration of clinical and anatomic pathology.

Microbiology Top 
 
10 Semester Hours  

This course investigates the properties and characteristics of microorganisms and their role in disease processes that are essential to the diagnosis of clinical infections and chemotherapy. Included is the study of microbes and molecular mechanisms of microbial disease pathogenesis. The place of modern laboratory and diagnostic technologies is also studied.

Immunology

04 Semester hours

This course covers all aspects of the immune response. Students will gain an understanding of how immunology relates to health maintenance and disease. Major topics covered include general properties of the immune response, antigen antibody interactions, transplantation, immunodeficiency, autoimmune diseases, and the effects of immunologic reactions. 

Medical Genetics Top 
 
4 Semester Hours  

Building upon a foundation of information from cell biology and human molecular genetics, this course explains the fundamentals in heredity and variation in humans as well as human genetic features and constitution. The course builds on these basics with current applications of how mutations cause disease and provides principles underlying the diagnosis and treatment of genetic disorders.

Pathology II  Top

This course incorporates all previous knowledge obtained throughout the basic sciences to gain an understanding of pathology on a system by system basis. Each organ system is studied in turn, and all known pathologies are discussed on the basis of microscopic histology, macroscopic histology, etiology, clinical presentation, complications, associated syndromes, and prognosis.

Pharmacology  Top

In this course the aim is to present the fundamentals of the delivery and maintenance of therapeutic levels of drugs at the target tissues. Intensity of drug affect, and duration of drug action is seen to be controlled by the pathways of drug movement and metabolism in the body. The course includes study of all major classes of therapeutic medications used in clinical practice in the treatment of disease processes.

Behavioral Sciences  Top

In this course the application of scientific methods are used to study the behavior of organisms with particular emphasis on human behavior. The whole array of consultation problems presented for clinical  help including anxiety, chronic pain, delirium, dementia, depression, disruptive behavior, panic states, and self-destructive behaviors, to name a few, are all studied.

Medical Ethics Top 
 
4 Semester Hours

This course provides the principles underlying the ethical and legal issues involved in the practice of medicine. Lectures and seminars promote discussion of topics such as confidentiality, disclosure, death and dying, and informed consent. Study of the abstract, conceptual substrate, underlying ethical decision-making, helps inform any ethical analysis. Dilemmas arising from actual cases form the basis of discussion of medical ethical issues.

Physical Diagnosis  Top 
 
10 Semester Hours  

This course will assist students in acquiring the skills necessary for patient interviewing, obtaining a medical history and performing a routine physical examination. Students will visit local clinics in the surrounding area and will be expected to apply their classroom knowledge to real patients for the first    time. Students will practice their examination skills under close supervision by experienced General Practitioners.

Introduction to Clinical Medicine Top

Students will work in small groups at clinics under the supervision of trained physicians to further prepare them for the clerkship phase of training. When students are not visiting clinics, lectures and demonstrations of physicals and neurological examinations will be presented. Students will be expected to discuss differential diagnoses, investigational techniques, and treatments pertaining to the clinical scenarios they encounter.
